Immersive capture is changing. The evolution is no longer simply about increasing the resolution of 360° cameras, but about capturing more information from a scene and moving some production decisions into post-processing.

That is the context in which the Insta360 X6 arrives, officially introduced on August 12, 2026, as the company’s new flagship 360° camera.

Its key capability is 360° video recording in 8K at 50 frames per second. It uses two 1/1.1-inch square Sony sensors and, according to Insta360, delivers up to 14.5 stops of dynamic range. The camera also supports 10-bit color, I-Log, and native Dolby Vision.

Capture First, Decide Later

One of the defining characteristics of 360° capture is that the operator does not need to determine the final framing while recording.

The X6 takes advantage of this by preserving a complete representation of the scene, allowing different perspectives to be selected later. In addition to 360° capture, it can operate in single-lens mode to record wide-angle video at up to 5K 60fps.

For immersive production, this represents an important evolution: the camera is no longer simply a tool for recording a frame, but a device capable of preserving an entire scene that can later be reused in different ways.

AI Inside the Capture Workflow

The X6 incorporates a three-chip processing system, including a 4nm Qualcomm processor and two dedicated image-processing chips. Insta360 says the architecture provides greater computing power than the previous generation and enables image-processing and stitching tasks to be handled directly on the device.

Artificial intelligence also plays a role in editing. The camera includes AI Director, a tool that analyzes footage and automates part of the selection and editing process.

The significance of this integration goes beyond simply adding an AI feature. 360° content generates large amounts of visual information and can require a more complex workflow than conventional video. Automating part of that production process could reduce one of the barriers to creating immersive content.

One Piece of the XR Ecosystem

The X6 is not an XR device itself. It is a capture tool for the immersive ecosystem.

Its evolution points toward where this segment is heading: cameras capable of recording entire scenes at higher quality while incorporating processing and automation to turn that footage into usable content.

For immersive documentaries, events, education, virtual tourism, and other 360° experiences, that combination may be just as important as increased resolution.

The trend is clear: immersive capture is moving from recording panoramic video toward becoming an increasingly computational, automated, and flexible process.

The Insta360 X6 has been available since August 12, 2026 from $699,99.
